Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is Chiang Mai's most famous temple, on the mountain that watches over the city from the north-west. It is about 15 km from the Old City, a 30 to 40 minute drive. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM and costs 30 THB for foreign visitors. You can climb 306 steps or take the cable car, and most people spend 2 to 3 hours here.

What to See

The centerpiece is the golden chedi, about 24 meters tall, which shines in the sun and glows over the city at night. Legend says that in 1383 a sacred white elephant carried a Buddha relic up the mountain and stopped at this spot, and the temple was built where it stopped.

Stairs or Cable Car?

The stairs are free and take about 10 minutes at an easy pace. Choose the cable car (20 THB) if you have small children, older family members, or mobility issues. Many people take the cable car up and walk down the stairs for photos.

The New National Park Fee

Since 1 October 2025, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park charges 100 THB for foreign adults and 50 THB for foreign children (Thais pay 20 and 10 THB). This fee is for the forest trails and waterfalls, not for the temple. If you arrive by road, you only pay the 30 THB temple fee. If you hike the Monk's Trail, you pay the park fee.

Hike Up: The Monk's Trail

For a more peaceful way up, walk the Monk's Trail through the jungle.

Start: the end of Suthep Road, just south of Chiang Mai Zoo. Search "Wat Pha Lat" on Google Maps, and look for Basecamp Trail Cafe at the trailhead.
First stop: Wat Pha Lat, a quiet forest temple with old stone buildings and a stream running over large rocks. About 30 to 50 minutes from the trailhead.
Second part: A steeper climb from Wat Pha Lat to Doi Suthep.
Fee: 100 THB park fee for foreign adults.

Tips: Start early to avoid the heat. Wear shoes with good grip, because the trail is steep and slippery after rain. Bring water and mosquito repellent. Many people hike only to Wat Pha Lat, which is the most beautiful part, then take a red truck (songthaew) back down or up to the top.

How to Get There

Grab or Bolt: The easiest option. Book one way up.
Red truck (songthaew): Trucks wait in front of the temple entrance and leave when full. Going back down to the city costs 60 or 80 THB per person, depending on where you get off.
From the airport or Mae Hia: Doi Suthep is north-west of the city, so from the airport or Mae Hia you go around the city instead of through it. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes by car.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (6:00 to 8:00 AM): Cool air, fewer people, and mountain mist.
Late afternoon: Softer light and sunset views over the city.
November to February: Cool and dry, with the clearest views. From about March to April, smoke from seasonal burning can hide the view.

Add Bhubing Palace

About 6 km further up the mountain is Bhubing Palace, the royal family's winter residence, famous for its rose gardens.

Hours: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (tickets sold until 3:30 PM)
Entry: 50 THB for adults
Closed: usually for a period between January and March, when the royal family is in residence
Dress code: stricter than the temple. No shorts, short skirts, sleeveless tops, or sandals without back straps.

Temple Etiquette

Cover your shoulders and knees. Sarongs are available if you forget.
Take off your shoes before entering temple buildings. Slip-on shoes make this easier.
Keep your voice low, and never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk.
Women should not touch monks or hand things to them directly.
